As part of a complete refurbishment of social housing in Doncaster, St Leger Homes was looking for a strategic partner to help it cost-effectively install new heating systems in thousands of council-owned properties. St Leger Homes has undertaken the most significant upgrade to council homes ever in Doncaster to ensure all the homes it manages meet the Decent Homes Standard.
The Decent Homes Standard states that all social housing should meet a minimum standard of decency. As part of the criteria, homes should have 'reasonably modern boilers'*.
David Norman, mechanical and electrical manager at St Leger Homes said: "We look after 21,000 homes in the Doncaster area, and as part of the Decent Homes refurbishment scheme, a large number of these properties required improvements to their heating system. With the volume of units involved and the associated installation costs to fit each one, we needed a strategic partner who would be able to offer value for money as well as help us get the boilers installed quickly and efficiently.”
Potterton recommended the Potterton Promax Combi HE plus A boiler. These compact, wall-mounted boilers are designed to be easy to install in a wide range of homes, and come with a mounting jig to reduce the time required for installation. A comprehensive range of flue options is also available for the boiler to make siting easier too.
David continued: "Potterton recommended that we go for the 28kW and 24KW model as these will meet the heat and hot water needs for a majority of our tenants, and as it is a fully modulating boiler it would also be fuel efficient for those with a lower demand too.
"The advantage for us of specifying just one boiler model was that our engineers have now become very proficient in installing, servicing and repairing one model and only need to carry one set of spares. This has allowed us to streamline our operational costs as well as improve the service we offer to the tenants as most of the time we can make repairs there and then. By buying large numbers of one boiler, we have been able to reduce the cost per unit too, which all helps to make our budget go further.”
Maintenance of Potterton Promax Combi HE plus A boilers is made easier by special features including built in frost protection and a pump that automatically runs every 24 hours to keep itself in prime condition.

Our installers were given free technical training to ensure each boiler that goes into one of our properties works at its best and that tenants are given the right information about how to use their new heating system to reduce their energy bills.
"We have also been given direct access to the company's Customer Support team. This is really important for us as we have target times to respond to maintenance issues, so if there's a boiler fault that requires an engineer and it's under warranty, we can call before 3pm and get someone out the next day - guaranteed.

St Leger Homes have installed almost 4,000 Potterton Promax Combi HE plus A boilers in the last three years. They have replaced aging combi boilers, like for like, and have also been used to replace back boilers.
