As part of its first, low energy housing development at Burnopfield in County Durham, new-build developer Akenside Developments has contracted Potterton to supply and install a range of energy efficient solar thermal and heating products for a terrace of six, two-bedroom properties in Albion Court.
The products were specified to provide a Code Level 4 solution for this development of two bedroom mews houses which have been built to provide comfortably proportioned, well designed homes at affordable prices. All the houses on the development will boast Potterton In-Roof Solar Thermal heating sets, Baxi Megaflo System Compact boilers and Santon PremierPlus Solar Cylinders to offer exceptional energy efficiency and minimise boiler usage. Thanks to the specification of the technology, each purchaser will also be eligible to apply for a renewable heat premium payment (RHPP) of £300 upon purchase of the house.
Solar Keymark Certified, the Potterton Solar In-roof set will combine with the Solar Cylinder and boiler to generate the majority of hot water for each dwelling. This solar thermal heating system is capable of providing up to 90% of hot water over the summer months and 55% annually. When heating or additional hot water is required, the Baxi MegafloSystem Compact GA will activate. This boiler is the highest SEDBUK (2005) Band 'A' rated boiler on the market, capable of transforming 90% of fuel into heat which will have a huge impact on the reduction of fuel bills for Albion Court residents. The Baxi Megaflo now features innovative 'THINK' combustion management technology as part of a number of innovations which optimise reliability, efficiency and cost savings in this type of new-build application.

We chose Potterton to provide the heating solution for all six properties, because of the unique energy saving benefits provided by their MCS accredited products and fair market pricing.”
Akenside has recognised that energy efficient housing will become more popular as fuel prices continue to increase dramatically so it has developed a range of low cost, two bedroom starter or retirement units that will cost very little to run.
It intends to expand this range of fuel efficient homes into the three and four bedroom market eventually.
The houses are fitted with Potterton Solar thermal panel system which is connected to a Santon PremierPlus water cylinder, which will provide 90% of hot water during the summer months and make a significant contribution during the winter months. Overall it will provide approximately 55% of hot water throughout the year, free of charge.
Insulation levels meet code level 4 (Code for Sustainable Homes). These houses are insulated to a standard well in excess of Building Regulation requirements, and together with a high efficiency Baxi gas condensing boiler central heating system, and low energy lighting, each home will have very affordable energy bills.
The roof has been designed without using traditional roof trusses, which creates a large open void. The roof has been designed to include this volume within the upstairs room by having the ceiling follow the roof line. This gives a light and airy feel to the bedrooms and bathroom, and gives a distinct 'designer' feel to the home.
