How to get the most out of your heating system

In most households in the UK, the cost of heating and hot water accounts for around half of the home's fuel bills. By ensuring your heating system is as efficient as possible, you can reduce your bills and reduce your carbon emissions.

Most homes in the UK have central heating that comprises a boiler that heats water in radiators and provides hot water to taps. Most boilers run on mains gas, or, in off-mains gas areas, oil, LPG, coal or wood. Some homes rely on electric storage heaters and an electric immersion heater for hot water.

We offer the following advice to get the most out of your heating system:

  • If your boiler is not a condensing model, replace it with a newer, more energy efficient model
  • Ask your installer to use chemical inhibitors to keep your central heating system working efficiency
  • Fit controls that make sure your boiler only provides heat where and when you want it
  • Consider changing to a cheaper or lower carbon fuel or technology, such as solar thermal, biomass or micro-CHP
  • Make sure your doors and windows are draught proofed, and your roof and cavity walls are insulated
